Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Treatment

At the Melbourne Headache Centre we understand how frustrating and frightening cyclic vomiting syndrome is.

You've taken your sick child to the doctor and other medical professionals. But the treatment provided so far only helps when vomiting begins, and has done nothing to prevent the next attack.

You have been told your sick child:
  • Has a virus that will clear up soon
  • Needs stomach and gastro-intestinal system tests and these come back clear
  • Could be suffering and in distress until they are an adult.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome is described in the classification system for headache because the same problem causes nausea and vomiting in its 'cousin' migraine.

So Why can Melbourne Headache Centre successfully treat cyclic vomiting syndrome?

The answer and treatment for many sufferers of cyclic vomiting syndrome lies in the close connection between the 'headache centre' in the brainstem and one of the key controls in the brainstem for nausea and vomiting.

These connections are what causes nausea and vomiting in migraine sufferers, and it is why cyclic vomiting syndrome can respond so well to the same type of treatment.

Melbourne Headache Centre has treated children as young as 3 years old successfully for cyclic vomiting syndrome.

A cure will not come from treating the symptoms. Identify and treat a leading cause of cyclic vomiting syndrome.

Curious about how we achieve successful treatment outcomes for cyclic vomiting syndrome?

The 'headache centre' in the brainstem is the trigeminal nucleus - responsible for all referred signals to the brain, and known to be overactive in chronic migraine and headache.

The cause of this overactivity in a vast majority of cases is a misunderstood and poorly treated mechanical fault in the top of the neck. This causes a constant flow of excess signals to be sent from the upper three cervical nerves directly into the trigeminal nucleus. As the signal spreads it can begin to irritate a key control centre in nausea that leads to vomiting - the 'solitary nucleus' - NTS or "nucleus tractus solitarius.

The NTS recievies input from a range of areas including the vagus nerve (stomach), CTRZ - detecting toxins in the blood, the vestibular system (motion sickness), the vagus nerve (gag reflex in the throat) and from dopamine receptors which are triggered in stress responses (fight or flight mechanism).

Research has shown that the NTS is activated when migraineurs experience nausea in their prodrome and during headache. In other words it is activated independently of pain or pain intensity. Not unlike silent migraine, or migraine aura without headache, on rare occasions these symptoms can be present in the absence of headache, and so it is with cyclic vomiting syndrome and chronic nausea and vomiting syndrome.

By correcting the fault in the top of the neck we decrease the overstimulation of the brainstem, and successfully treat all forms of headache including migraine, and cyclic vomiting syndrome in a safe, natural and sustainable way.

Take control of this condition today, and get your life or the life of your child back.
